I lean and loafe at my ease …. observing a spear of summer grass.
- from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” in Leaves of Grass
CONTEMPLATIONI lean and loaf and sit aroundTaking in the sights and soundsOf shore or meadow or a wooded trail;I’ll watch a squirrel shake its tailOr listen to the crickets chirp.Feel the sun upon my back.Know I’m practicing the knackOf letting go and being stillLoosening the grip of willAnd purpose in my life,Taking a break from strain and strife.Yet, before I know it, the moment’s past. These contemplations never last.In a flash I’m back in driveWith thoughts and plans to striveFor more and better thingsThat work and effort brings. There’s a balance to be struckAnd with some wisdom and some luckI’ll know again that Inner PeaceOf Rest, Relaxation, and Release.
